Leading South by Landing South
Happy to see fellows celebrating the victory of Chandrayan- 3 through different platforms. Obviously, it is a moment to cherish not only on the landing but also on the morale the nation possess.
The former Lunar mission Chandrayan -2 could only succeed partially due to the crash landing of Lander Vikram on the Moon's surface. The limitations in software to detect errors, inadequacy in the thrust production and small landing site were the major reasons behind the collapse as identified by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
ISRO this time has followed a failure-based design unlike its earlier
mission. Critical innovations and changes were brought by the team to ensure success. Landing tests in different terrains, increasing original landing space (even though a precise location is predetermined), and improving the capacities of the lander are some of them. Also, we have to acknowledge the succour provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (American Space Agency) and ESA (European Space Agency) since the launch.
Amid the final lap, crash of the Russian spacecraft LUNA 25 targeting the same location (not exact) created tension among the trackers. This was fuelled when the chairman mentioned the final 15 minutes will be "15 minutes of terror".
Since the Lunar South is deficient in Sunlight (due to the meager tilt of the moon's axis) it makes the region frozen, this equally excites and makes it distinctive. Hence, the scientific community expects the exploration has the potential to unlock many unanswered queries which can be even extended to the origin of the solar system.
We fail, we learn, we rise.
